Palmetto Beach

Today is a big milestone – I’ve been working through different phases of research, planning, and design for the Palmetto Beach neighborhood since 2017 when we first identified its potential to flooding through the Community Vulnerability Study. Since then, work has been completed with City of Tampa, Whit Remer, Ping Wang, Applied Sciences Consulting, Inc. and many others to go from focus area studies to design and engineering.

All this has led to the announcement today of a $24 million grant to provide upgrades to the existing sea wall and streetscapes in the Palmetto Beach neighborhood. Just last year this community was flooded by Hurricane Idalia. This is an historic working waterfront community that had crab shack restaurants and cigar factories. The infrastructure upgrades will help protect the neighborhood from future storms and will create walkable streets and a renewed public waterfront space.
